Secure your recycling boxes

Secure your recycling boxes

PEOPLE are being urged to make sure their recycling boxes are securely “weighted down” to stop them blowing around in gale force winds.

Although – without wishing to tempt fate – it looks as if the worst of the wintery and blustery weather is behind us, South Somerset District Council has said residents may have unwittingly contributed to increased litter problems of late.

A council spokesman said: “We would appeal to residents to be mindful of the weather forecast before they put out their recycling as this is causing an awful lot of extra work for the street cleaning operatives which in itself is expensive.”

It could be argued, however, that the real problems with recycling in bad weather comes after the boxes have been emptied.

People have lost recycling boxes which have been blown about by strong winds after they have been emptied of their contents by the Somerset Waste Partnership.
