Gettting children involved in THEIR heritage

THERE were some exciting hands-on activities over the February half-term break for children organised by South Somerset District Council’s heritage team.

Staff joined forces with the council’s community health and leisure team to hold activities at two locations in Yeovil - Milford Hall in Milford Road and at St Peter’s Hall in Coronation   Avenue.Gettting children involved in THEIR heritage

The theme of pre-history saw children and adults getting stuck in to making ‘hand print’ paintings, coil pots from clay, finding the words on pre-history related word searches and sharing historical photographs of the Milford Road and Coronation Road areas and Yeovil as a whole in the 1960s.

Heritage information assistant at the Community Heritage Access Centre, Joseph Lewis, said: “The activities were really great to do. Clay pot making is one of our most popular practical sessions, but this was our first time at these locations. The mix of activities worked very well and we were glad to see so many people come along and enjoy themselves.

“We would like to thank Milford Hall and St Peter’s Hall and the Play Rangers at each site for helping us. The Council organise a wide variety of half term activities and we were able to be part of this existing structure.”

Visits to the Community Heritage Access Centre are always welcome by appointment. You can make an appointment by calling 01935-462855 or emailing heritage.services@southsomerset.gov.uk .
