Fly-tippers are creating Yeovil eyesores blasts councillor

A COUNCILLOR has branded areas of waste land in Yeovil which have become popular sites for illegal fly-tippers as “eyesores.”

Now Cllr Andrew Kendall is hoping that a decision to open the Yeovil household waste recycling centre every day of the week will lead to a decrease to fly-tipping in the town.

Cllr Andrew Kendall, who is a member of South Somerset District Council and Yeovil Town Council, was delighted with the news last week that the Yeovil “tip” is to open daily from 8am to 4pm.

Many residents in the St George’s Avenue area of Yeovil recently reported an increase in large amounts of dumped waste and rubbish.  Furniture, carpet and other large items had been thrown over fenced areas into open space areas next to new homes.

Cllr Kendall quickly intervened to report the dumped rubbish and get it cleared.Fly-tippers are creating Yeovil eyesores blasts councillor

He and Liberal Democrat colleagues have also tackled overgrown vegetation on waste land across the Yeovil area, including where the fly-tipping had taken place.

“Some areas of waste land around Yeovil have become an eyesore,” said Cllr Kendall.

“I have been working hard with the district council and street scene team to maintain vegetation and green spaces in our area.

“Sadly an increase in the dumping of waste and furniture by reckless individuals is making this difficult.  However, it is good news that Somerset Waste Partnership has listened to local residents’ and our calls to open Yeovil’s tip for longer.”

Cllr Kendall added: “I certainly welcome the new opening hours from this April, but we must remain vigilant about fly-tipping in our open spaces.

“I am now walking all open spaces within central Yeovil monthly, inspecting for any mess or ways to improve our area to make it a better place to live.”
