SOUTH Somerset District Council has been offered £1m to enable it to “secure and develop” a site for new sports facilities – as long as it gives Yeovil Town FC permission to go-ahead with plans to develop its Huish Park stadium.Big money offer given to council by Yeovil Town FC

The football club wants to get planning approval for a food store to be built on the north of stadium which is currently used as training pitches.

And Mark Wood, chartered town planner for MWA Planning Consultancy which is helping Yeovil Town with the planning application, said in a letter to council planning officer Simon Fox that the “financial contribution” would be made to address the loss of “open space” at Huish Park.

Mr Wood, in his letter, said that the applicants had submitted a letter to Mr Fox’s council colleague Martin Woods regarding the offer of £1m and he then wrote in brackets – one million pounds – just to clarify the amount!

He said the offer of £1m would “enable the council to secure and develop a site accommodating two sports pitches together with changing and associated facilities.”

He said the offer was made followed a meeting with council representatives in December 2013.
