New road to be named after former Mayor

CHARD Town Council has agreed that a new road will be named after a former Mayor.

The council’s planning and highways committee was recently asked at its meeting in January to consider making a proposal for the naming of a new road.New road to be named after former Mayor

The road, which is part of the new development being built off Jarman Way, will be called David Way in memory of former Chard Mayor, Cllr Dave Hill, who died in 2011, while still serving on the council.

His daughter Lorraine said: “I am extremely proud and honoured that the town of Chard, for which my dad cared so passionately, has paid this tribute to him.”

Some of the council’s longer serving members have fond memories of working with the late Cllr Hill.

Cllr Martin Wale, himself a former Chard Mayor, said: “Dave was involved in nearly every aspect of our town.

“Apart from being Mayor he chaired numerous organisations and societies which benefited all ages in our community.”

Cllr Wale added: “Dave was essentially a quiet man, but when he did give his opinion it was always measured, fair and only had the interests of the people of Chard at heart. He never complained and was an example to us all who were lucky enough to know him.”

Cllr Dave Bulmer said: “Dave Hill was much respected and regarded as a real gentleman when conducting his town council duties.

“It is appropriate that Chard Town Council remembers him by naming a street after him.”
