THE Vaughan Lee House at Ilminster hosted a champagne celebration to mark the 100th birthday of resident Daisy Hayball.

Surrounded by her family, friends and her Vaughan Lee family a toast and speech by her son Alan kicked-off the celebrations.

Daisy moved to Vaughan Lee House in 2009 after having lived on her own until the age of 95.

She was born in Greenwich in Kent and was one of eight children.

Daisy said: “Being one of ten in the house was responsible for me learning to dance – we only had one bathroom!”Centenarian Daisy says: When you were in a family of ten and shared one bathroom – you quickly learnt to dance!

In her early years she worked in the accounts office of a biscuit manufacturer until her marriage to Eric Hayball in 1938.

Eric joined a tank regiment of the Army in 1940, but stayed in the UK until the invasion of Europe.

For a time Daisy was able to live near to her husband in Ringmore in South Devon, while he was training to join the invasion.

Her sons, Alan and David, were born in 1942 and 1944 respectively.

After the war Daisy and her husband stayed in London until 1968 when they relocated to Chard to stay close to their son Alan and his family. Daisy’s other son, David, had relocated to South Africa by then.

Daisy is blessed with three grandsons and one great-grandson.

Daisy was a member of the Women’s Institute in Chard and still meets up with a few of her friends from her WI days.

She has a wicked sense of humour having her 100th birthday cake ready “Daisy, 100 and still cheeky” which was presented to her by her son David.

Daisy received a letter from Ian Duncan Smith MP and a card from the Queen.
