Advice to use internet safely

POLICE officers will be in Yeovil town centre today (Tuesday, February 11, 2014) to give out advice on how to ensure people – young and old – can use the internet safely.

Today is International Safer Internet Day and the aim is to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones – especially among children and young people.

Police officers will be at the bandstand area in Middle Street in Yeovil today (Tuesday, February 11, 2014) from between 11.30am and 2pm giving out online safety advice.

Safer Internet TV will be running online from 12noon to 8pm today – you can watch it at www.saferinternet.org.uk/safer-internet-day/2014/tv. The programmes will include something for everyone – teachers and professionals, children and young people, as well as parents.Advice to use internet safely

Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Constabulary, Nick Gargan, himself a keen internet and Twitter user, said: “Social media and the internet are fantastic resources and present many fun and exciting learning and social opportunities.

“However, we need to keep in mind that sadly the world online is the same as the real world and there are risks we need to be aware of and take steps to minimise.

“As always – prevention is better than cure.”

Mr Gargan added: “It isn’t just children we want to reach. Anyone who uses the internet either socially of for shopping, banking or other business uses needs to know how to protect themselves.

“There are lots of simple, but effective things people can do to keep themselves safe online, so I encourage everyone to take part in Safer Internet Day.”
