Hundreds sign petition to save Yeovil bus service

CAMPAIGNERS wanting to save an important bus route in Yeovil from being scrapped braved the weather this morning (Monday, January 6, 2014) for one final push for its survival.

Liberal Democrat councillors joined local residents at a bus shelter along Larkhill Road in Yeovil where they called on Somerset County Council to maintain the threatened South West Coaches’ Number 11 bus service.

It has emerged that more than 200 local people have signed a petition against County Hall’s proposals.

A public consultation about changes and potential losses of many Somerset bus services – including Yeovil’s Number 11 – comes to an end today.Hundreds sign petition to save Yeovil bus service

The Number 11 bus connects key locations such as Asda, medical centres in Preston Grove and Hendford, the town centre and South Somerset District Council’s offices at Brympton Way.

Residents presented the petition to LibDem county councillors Sam Crabb, Jane Lock and Dave Greene.

Cllr Lock, who represents people in the Yeovil West division, said: “This petition shows the strength of local feeling against the proposed county council bus cuts.

“Over 200 local residents, plus many more online, have told the council during this consultation that these cuts are a mistake.”

Cllr Lock added that she and her colleagues would be speaking with senior officers and writing to council about the concerns.

“We will be urging the county council to rethink the proposed cuts,” she said.

The county council is currently reviewing its funding of several local bus services.
