Elderly couple rescued from floods

FIREFIGHTERS from Yeovil had to help an elderly couple to safety this afternoon (Monday, January 6, 2014) after their car got trapped in floodwater.

The couple phoned the emergency services just before 2pm after getting stuck in deep floodwater at Muchelney Ham, Langport.

Fire engines from Yeovil and Martock attended along with a specialist rescue team from Bridgwater.

A spokesman for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “On arrival we found one male outside of the vehicle and an elderly couple still within the vehicle.”

The Fire Service has urged motorists to avoid driving through floodwater and to take notice of "road closed" signs.
