Crashed police helicopter pilot was Air Day veteran

THE pilot of the police helicopter which crashed into a Glasgow pub at the weekend was a veteran of RNAS Yeovilton’s International Air Day.

Nine people were killed after the helicopter – piloted by David Traill – crash landed into the crowded Clutha bar late on Friday (November 29, 2013).

Captain Traill, 51, was killed alongside helicopter passengers PCs Kirsty Nelis, 36, and Tony Collins, 43, and six other people in the pub.

Capt Traill, who was a retired RAF flight lieutenant, displayed the RAF Chinook helicopter at the International Air Day at RNAS Yeovilton back in 2007 and also took part in the ever-popular Commando Assault Finale that same year.

A spokesman for the Air Day event said: “We send our condolences to his family and to all the families who have lost loved ones.”

Capt Traill had served in Iraq and Afghanistan during a 20-year career as a Chinook pilot.
