Police car keys warning after botched burglary

CAR owners are breathing a sigh of relief after they nearly lost their vehicles during a botched burglary in Yeovil.

In the early hours of Thursday, November 20, a house on West Coker Road was targeted in a burglary. Someone saw car keys for two vehicles on a window sill next to a front door and used a stick through the letter box to try and reach the keys. They knocked the keys to the floor which disturbed the occupants inside.Police car keys warning after botched burglary

The incident was reported to police and an investigation is underway to identify the person, or people, responsible.

A police spokesman said: "Had the burglar – or burglars - been successful he would have been able to drive off with two cars and would have caused the owners a considerable amount of distress and inconvenience."

To minimise the risk of your car being stolen please remember to:

•  Leave your vehicle secure – shut windows and doors and remember to lock the car.

•  Park in well-lit areas or consider installing motion-activated security lighting on your drive.

•  Keep your car keys out-of-sight and stored aware from doors and windows – preferably in a locked cupboard or cabinet.

•  Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place such as a door mat or a flower pot – thieves often look there first.

•  When you move into a new home change the door locks so you can be sure no one else has keys to your home.
