No festive lights contest for Abbey Manor homes. Bah-humbug!

BAH-HUMBUG! People living on the Abbey Manor estate in Yeovil are unable to take part in a fun festive competition because of environmental health concerns over possible light pollution.

The annual Christmas lights competition – to find the best festive display at a home - has normally been open to everyone living within the parish of Yeovil Town.

But organisers at Yeovil Town Council have this year opened up the competition for the whole of Yeovil to allow the parishes of Yeovil Without and Brympton to take part.

Yeovil Without Parish Council, which consists of the Brimsmore, Combe and Lyde areas of the town, has accepted the offer and is encouraging people to take part.

But Brympton Parish Council, which covers the Abbey Manor estate and Houndstone areas of Yeovil, has declined.

A spokesman for Brympton Parish Council said: “I can confirm that the Christmas lights competition is only open to parishioners in Yeovil Town and Yeovil Without.

“An invitation was extended to the parish council to join in the steering group for the competition.

“However, the parish council felt it did not wish to accept the invitation as there were concerns on environmental issues such as light pollution for adjacent neighbours.”

A team of judges, led by Yeovil Mayor, Cllr Manny Roper, will visit nominated displays and winning entries will be presented with prizes in the New Year.

The competition was discussed at last week’s Yeovil Without Parish Council where councillors were told that people have until Friday, December 6, 2013, to get their nominations in.

People can either nominate their own display or that of a neighbour. Nomination forms are available from the link below and should be sent to Lauren Park at Yeovil Town Council, the Town House, 19 Union Street, Yeovil, Somerset BA20 1PQ or alternatively email the details ytc@yeovil.gov.uk .
