Parking concerns over car auction centre plans

COUNCILLORS have parking concerns about plans to build a new car auction centre on the outskirts of Yeovil.

Members of Brympton Parish Council this week supported proposals submitted to South Somerset District Council for the change of use of land and buildings at the vacant site on the corner of Lufton Way and Artillery Road on Houndstone to a car auction centre with an office, café and storage facilities.

Cllr Paul Taylor said: “I don’t have a problem with this as the land is derelict and it is screened to nearby residents.”Parking concerns over car auction centre plans

Cllr Sarah Lindsay added: “It is a perfect site for this.”

The proposals have indicated parking spaces for several hundred vehicles, but councillors do have fears that there could be problems on a busy trading day.

Councillors said that an auction on the same day as a Yeovil Town FC match at nearby Huish Park could cause traffic chaos.

Cllr Jonathan Davies said: “The concern is that if you’ve got hundreds of cars for auction what happens when hundreds of people turn up for the auction.”

Councillors supported the application as long as there were conditions put in place about the parking.

Cllr Peter Seib said: “This would be acceptable as long as it doesn’t mean cars having to park out on the road.”

The applicants have indicated that the proposed car auction centre would create 35 new jobs for the area and make use of a vacant commercial site.
