PEOPLE had to make a double-take last night (Friday, November 29, 2013) when they saw fun-loving Mayor, Cllr Jenny Kenton, dance Gangnam Style in Chard town centre - dressed in full ceremonial regalia.

Crowds looked on as members of a cheer aerobics class from the 1610 Cresta Leisure Centre gave a demonstration, but were then joined by town crier Stuart Cumming, mace bearer Mark Hambrey and the Mayor as they recreated Gangnam Style – the cult dance to the single of the same name by South Korean musician Psy.

While more traditionalists may have frowned upon Cllr Kenton getting involved in such activities while wearing the historic Mayoral robes and chain of office, the vast majority loved it – knowing that seeing the Mayor go Gangnam Style was a first for Chard and probably won’t be seen again!

It came just after the Mayor had helped to officially switch-on the Chard Christmas lights at the Guildhall in the centre of the town.Mayor dances Gangnam Style in town centre

Earlier in the evening the Mayor donned a Father Christmas costume and joined around 50 others for a Santa Dash to raise money for her designated charities – Ferne Animal Sanctuary, the Lord’s Larder and the Beacon Centre.

It is hoped that the Santa Dash will have raised more than £1,000 for the Mayor’s Charity Fund.

The Santa Dash runners were given a brisk warm-up by Kelly Druce, of the Kelly Leigh School of Dance, while the real Father Christmas arrived soon after supported by Chard’s very gold Goldstar majorettes.

But the sight of the Mayor going Gangnam Style was undoubtedly the highlight of the night and came just five days after joining town crier Stuart Cumming on a pub crawl of the town as he went on a ceremonial ale-tasting tour of Chard’s hostelries.

The Yeovil Press would like to point out that the Mayor of Chard is tea-total! She just goes to prove that you don’t need alcohol to have a good time!

Next up for the Mayor of Chard – a charity abseil off of the church roof. Watch this space!
