These donations will be added to thousands of others from round the country to go towards welfare work, conducted by the British Legion, which is a lifeline for thousands of serving and ex-Service people.

A Stanchester spokesman said: "There was a huge sense of pride and involvement during Remembrance Day at Stanchester with students having just arrived back from a history trip to Belgium that saw them visit the Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery and Memorial.

"Students also attended a service at Ham Hill on Remembrance Sunday and students observed a two-minute silence at Ham Hill to mark the Armistice."
