Gold Star Awards 2013: Amazing young man gains a standing ovation!

THERE was a standing ovation when a young seven-year-old little boy confidently marched onto the stage of the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil last night (Tuesday, October 29, 2013) to receive a special award.

Connor Swain, of Ilminster, was being presented with a Gold Star after winning the Young Carer of the Year category as part of the annual awards hosted by South Somerset District Council.

The large audience heard how Connor had learnt to know exactly what to do when his mum, Kirsty, who suffers from epilepsy, had a seizure – ever since he was aged just two.

And as soon as Connor’s name was revealed as the winner of the award – the audience rose as one to applaud such an amazing young man.

Connor was not fazed by the attention and stood confidently facing the crowd and beaming from ear to ear.

It was the real “tear jerker” moment of the night among a host of other fantastic and deserved award winners.

There were two awards where the judges could not pinpoint an overall winner and had to give joint prizes.

Milborne Port Football Club and the Spirit Acrobatic Gymnastics Club jointly won the Junior Sports Club of the Year award, while Alex Watts and Keith Walters were named as joint winners of the Sports Coach of the Year.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was won by Tina Boyce.

Award winners were as follows: Against the Odds, Jack Goodland; Charity Hero Award, Martock Youth Parish Council; Community Champion, Kate Craigie; Contribution to the Arts, Atticus Bowring; Junior Sports Club of the Year, Milborne Port Football Club and Spirit Acrobatic Gymnastics Club; Outstanding Educational Achievement Award, Thomas Reynolds; Sports Coach of the Year, Alex Watts and Keith Walters; Sports Performer of the Year, Rob Hogg; Young Carer of the Year, Connor Swain; Young Volunteer of the Year, Kayleigh Dyer; Lifetime Achievement Award, Tina Boyce.
