PEOPLE are being asked to keep their eyes out for water buffalo meat stolen from a farm near Yeovil.

The family-run West Country Water Buffalo company based at Lower Oakley Farm near Chilthorne Domer was broken into during the early hours of Thursday, October 17, 2013, and all the meat for the weekend markets was stolen.

A spokesman for the company said: “If anyone saw anything or hears anything about our water buffalo meat being sold elsewhere – please let us or the police know as soon as possible.”

The spokesman, speaking on the social networking Facebook site, said the meat would have been vac-packed with its own branded labels on it.

“If it is taken out of our packaging it could be sold as beef without people knowing,” they added.

The raiders also left all the gates open to the farm, but thankfully none of the buffalo got out and were all unharmed.Water buffalo meat stolen from farm near Yeovil

The meat stolen would have been officially sold this morning (Friday, October 18, 2013) at the Sherborne farmers’ market and at the market at Crewkerne tomorrow (Saturday, October 19, 2013) between 9am and 1pm.

Lower Oakley Farm is home to a herd of around 250 water buffalo – which have descended from the Asian Water Buffalo.

They produce flavoursome meat and recent studies have suggested health benefits can be found with water buffalo meat.

Anyone with information about the theft can phone police on 101 or West Country Water Buffalo on 01935-840567 or email info@westcountrywaterbuffalo.com .
