Electoral registration form benefits

PEOPLE are being told there are plenty of benefits for them if they complete their electoral registration form.

Residents in South Somerset should have received their electoral registration forms through the post. This is to ensure the electoral register is as up-to-date as possible ahead of next year’s European Parliament elections.

Now they are being encouraged to return or confirm their details by phone or on-line to ensure that they are registered to be able to voice their opinion in future elections and can have their say.Electoral registration form benefits

There are many benefits to being on the electoral register including making it easier for companies to establish that you are who you say you are, for example, when opening a mobile phone contract.

It is also important that 16 and 17-year-olds are added to the register so that they can vote but also so that they can get a bank account or credit when they turn 18. This can only be done using the registration form and not the online or telephone facilities.

Residents who don’t receive their form can contact the elections team on 01935 462462 or print one off at www.aboutmyvote.co.uk .

The council's returning officer, Ian Clarke, said: "Registering to vote is quick and simple. All you have to do is update the annual canvass form with details of everyone who lives in the household and is eligible to vote; and return it to us as soon as possible. It’s your vote, don’t lose it.”
