End of the road for parking problems in Milford Dip?

PARKING problems caused by an “unofficial car park” in Milford Dip could soon become a thing of the past in Yeovil.

Yeovil District Hospital staff and other town centre workers take advantage of the no parking restrictions and often park all day during the week on both sides of Milford Road, in the area popularly known as Milford Dip, which causes congestion for other motorists.End of the road for parking problems in Milford Dip?

Although that causes headaches for drivers with the heavy parking stopping free flowing traffic, it has actually helped to slow down the speed of motorists.

But the parking problems could become a thing of the past with plans to create more car parking facilities at the hospital.

South Somerset District Council recently gave permission for two former bungalows called Caeburn and Kenwyn and two blocks of flats, known as Cheverton House and Cheverton Tower in Higher Kingston, opposite the hospital, to be demolished and the land used as a temporary car park for the hospital.

This will allow the existing car park at the hospital to be developed into a multi-story car park which should ease the huge parking problems at the hospital – which have grown year-on-year due to the ever-growing number of services it provides leading to increased patient, visitor and staff numbers.

Discussions about the weekday parking problems in Milford Dip arose at South Somerset District Council’s Area South meeting last week where councillors gave the go-ahead for former allotments on the corner of Milford Road and Goldcroft to be transformed into a 29-home housing development.

Some opponents had cited that the parking issues in Milford Road were already bad and the new development would only add to those problems.

But Cllr Peter Gubbins said: “The parking in Milford Dip actually slows people down, so speeding isn’t a problem.

“But the planned hospital development will alleviate the parking problems in Milford Dip.”
