Council backs low interest loans for home repairs

HOMEOWNERS in Yeovil and South Somerset needing to make essential repairs to their home may be eligible for a low interest loan.

South Somerset District Council works in partnership with Wessex Home Improvement Loans, a not-for-profit organisation, to assist homeowners to make essential repairs, adaptations or improvements to their properties with a subsidised loan at 4% interest (typical 4.2% APR).Council backs low interest loans for home repairs

Now could be a good time to make home repairs before the winter weather sets in to ensure roofs are leak free, heating systems are working efficiently, windows are draft free and homes are safe and free from damp.

Other repairs include electrical and plumbing works and updating old kitchens and bathrooms which are over 15-years-old and deemed unfit for purpose.

The council's private sector housing spokesman, Cllr Shane Pledger, said: "People who own their homes which are in need of essential repair can struggle to know who to turn to when things go wrong and it can be reassuring to access financial assistance from their local council.

"Wessex Loans Advisers work closely with council staff to ensure the process runs smoothly and that any finance solution suits individual needs and means."

Finance is available from £1,000 up to £15,000 to be repaid over a maximum period of 15 years.

There are no hidden fees and no early repayment charges. The scheme is designed to help homeowners on a low income or in receipt of benefits who are unable to afford the repairs or access finance elsewhere commercially.
