Parents urged to stay vigilant

PARENTS are being urged to stay vigilant following three incidents in which young children have been approached by men in Yeovil.

Two incidents happened within 45 minutes of each other on Saturday (September 28) afternoon at Birchfield Park and then there was a third incident yesterday (Monday, September 30) at Rosebery Avenue in town.Parents urged to stay vigilant

Sgt Jamie Rees met with parents from the Birchfield area this afternoon to give them a briefing on what had been happening and what the police were doing.

He explained that two incidents happened in BirchfieldPark at around 3pm when there was a “flasher type” incident and then a second incident in which a young girl was approached.

Sgt Rees said that descriptions of the men involved were “limited” because they were dealing with information given by young children.

“Everybody is concerned, but we don’t want to give the wrong information out,” he said.

“I’m a parent just like many of you here and I’m not here to tell you how to suck eggs. But please talk to your children about the dangers of strangers – please pass the message to them.”

Sgt Rees said to parents: “Your vigilance is crucial. If you see anything that doesn’t look quite right, if you feel uncomfortable with something – phone us on 101 if it is a non-emergency or use 999 if you think a crime is being carried out.

“You pass through the park regularly and you will know the faces. One little clue might help catch these people.”

Sgt Rees told parents that he did not think the two incidents were linked and involved two different men.

He added that he did not have more information about yesterday’s incident in Rosebery   Avenue – but confirmed that “something similar” to the BirchfieldPark incidents had happened.
