CRIMINALS beware – there are plans to update and improve the CCTV system operating in Yeovil town centre.

The latest improvement, led by the Yeovil CCTV Steering Group, will see up-to-date modern recording through the addition of digital recorders which will record and play back images at 25 frames per second as opposed to the existing one frame.

This will improve the quality of recorded images allowing for better identification of offenders and recording incidents that happen in the town.

The play back quality will be as good as that seen on television and help evidence incidents for Police action and in court proceedings.Look out criminals - you are being watched!

The running of CCTV in Yeovil is jointly funded by South Somerset District Council and Yeovil Town Council, while this particular project has been funded by the budget from Avon & Somerset Police & Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens in a bid to make people be safe and feel safe.

The district council’s community safety co-ordinator and chairman of the CCTV Steering Group, Steve Brewer, has welcomed the additional funding from the Police Crime Commissioner.

“Although crime is low in Yeovil with the police and the Yeovil Crime Reduction Team doing a sterling job,” he said. “This will improve our chances of catching trouble makers in the town and improve outcomes with criminal proceedings.”

The council’s community safety spokesman, Cllr Tony Fife, has also welcomed the development.

“Yeovil CCTV is monitored 24 hours a day but this will greatly improve the quality of the recorded images, at a relatively low cost and maintain our system as fit for purpose for years to come,” he said.
