Age is no barrier - that's official!

TWO residents at the Compton View Care Home in Yeovil – with a combined age of a whopping 200 between them – show that age is no barrier when it comes to one sport.Age is no barrier - that's official!

Laura Morris, from Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership, visited the home in St Michael’s Avenue on her quest to encourage a greater number of older people to become more active, more often.

She delivered a Boccia taster session for residents at the home and found no shortage of willing participants enthusiastic to take up the challenge of what is a very competitive Paralympic sport when played at the highest levels of performance.

Boccia is similar to bowls and is a great inclusive target game which is played seated and caters for all abilities with age certainly being no barrier as residents Linda Tutchings and Lily Burwood, aged 101 and 99 years respectively, demonstrated.

Age is no barrier - that's official!Lily informed Laura, a newcomer to sport, that she was a bit of a “ringer” – having played bowls over 70 years ago, although she had not participated since then.

Laura said: “Both ladies thoroughly enjoyed the Boccia session and cannot wait to be involved in future action when I go back to provide further opportunities.

“This all goes to show you are never too old to take part and enjoy the company of like-minded individuals in sport and physical activity challenges.”
