Six drug arrests in day of action

POLICE have arrested six people and seized drugs including heroin and cocaine during a day of action today (Wednesday, July 24) across South Somerset and the Mendips.

Officers also found money and drugs equipment like scales and bags as they carried out morning raids on addresses in the district.

South Somerset Inspector Jackie Gold said: "This was a successful and high-profile operation that sends out a strong message that we will not tolerate drugs and the associated crime and anti-social behaviour they cause in our communities.

“Somerset remains a safe place to live but we know there is a small minority intent on causing problems for law-abiding people. Drugs can have a devastating impact on our local communities and we are determined to bring those that supply and use them in our area to justice."

The day of action brought together neighbourhood officers, PCSOs, local response officers, special constables and two specially-trained police drugs dogs.Six drug arrests in day of action

It began with breakfast briefings at stations in Yeovil and Wells before the teams headed out to execute Misuse of Drugs warrants and to search addresses. PCSOs followed up with house to house visits and leaflet drops to provide community reassurance and to appeal for further help from people to tell police about suspected drugs activity where they live.

Arrests were made at addresses in Wells, Glastonbury, Wincanton and Castle Cary during the raids.

Inspector Gold said: "We are committed to tackling the problems that drugs cause on our communities and will be taking more action like this in the future.

"We rely on the public to be our eyes and ears and I would appeal to anyone who is affected by drugs where they live, or knows of people using and dealing drugs, to contact us on 101."
