Drug-users urged to dispose of their waste safely

PEOPLE who come across drug-users syringes and needles in the street or parks in the Yeovil area are being urged to contact South Somerset District Council as quickly as possible.

The health risks associated with coming into contact with used needles and other drug-related paraphernalia are well-documented and there have been a number of occasions in recent weeks in Yeovil where people have discovered the evidence of drug-taking activity in parks.Drug-users urged to dispose of their waste safely

A council spokesman said: “Any member of the public that comes across drug-related paraphernalia in the street or open space is advised to contact us on 01935-462462 and provide as much detail as possible as to the location.

“Alternatively, if you can safely remove the item, place it into a plastic container, take it home and report it to the council.”

The council is responsible for clearing any drug-related materials from the streets and open spaces in our community. The waste is then collected and transferred to an incinerator for disposal.

The spokesman added: “It is suggested that anybody using drug paraphernalia disposes it in the correct manner – using sharps containers where they are provided such as at chemists.”

The council believes that the management of drug-related would be best co-ordinated by the teams who work with addicts on a day-to-day basis.
