Yeovil Town plaque received by history centre

A PLAQUE from Yeovil Town FC from more than 50 years ago has been received by Community Heritage Access Centre.

The centre, run by South Somerset District Council, received the plaque following a feature in the local press which highlighted the history of the Glovers.

Back in May when Yeovil won promotion to The Championship, the council’s heritage intern worker Ben Sayers celebrated the moment by looking at the centre's historical collection of the club including documents, newspapers and photographs.

Heritage staff also asked people if they would like to donate any other Yeovil Town FC memorabilia to the collection.Yeovil Town plaque received by history centre

Information assistant, Joseph Lewis, said: “Yeovil Town’s high profile promotion presented an opportunity to actively collect objects, in other words, ask the public if there were any items they would like to donate that would enhance an already notable collection of football memorabilia, particularly for current and future generations to enjoy.”

As a result the club donated a matchday programme of the winning match played at Wembley Stadium on May 19, staff documented that Victory Tour in photos and they also received a thought-provoking football plaque when Ike Clark was the manager.

The plaque has the inscription: Yeovil Southern League Champions 1954-55 v The Rest – Played at Yeovil, October 17, 1955.”

The plaque helps to appreciate Yeovil Town’s achievement by providing context to see how they have developed from Yeovil Casuals and Petters United through to the famous “sloping pitch” at Huish and the 1948-49 FA Cup season when they defeated Sunderland to earn the nickname Giant-Killers, through to their current promotion this season.

If anyone would like to see the plaque or other objects – visits by appointment please and tours on request.
