Hair Show success for Yeovil College

YEOVIL College’s hairdressing students celebrated their outstanding creative skills at a sell-out catwalk show held at the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil.

The event showcased the students’ work developing themes which demonstrated their hair styling talents alongside make up and costume designed to complete the required look.

The hair show featured approximately 130 models styled by students on Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 Full-time courses and Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships, as well as local school pupils who are completing qualifications at the College alongside their GCSEs programmes.

Stylists from Westfield Academy, King Arthurs Community School, Wadham School, Holyrood Academy, Bucklers Mead Academy and Huish Episcopi Academy appeared in the show.

The themes for this year’s event included Bridal, Animations, Fantasy, Cultural, Historical and Avant-garde which inspired the students to produce some stunning designs.

The various categories were judged by local employers including Caroline Gerrard (Gerrards Hair and Beauty, Yeovil), Julian Lewis (Salon Fish, Sherborne), Fredrick Monson (Fredricks Hair and Beauty, Yeovil), Jay Pryor (Pryor Appointment, Yeovil), Kerry Stockton Benn (Studio CCK, Ilchester), Nicky Taylor (Cyril Gallie at the Hair Shop, Yeovil) and Pete Burton (Cutting Edge, Yeovil).

In addition, the bridal dresses, worth more than £1,000, were kindly loaned to the students by Sandra House of Eleanor Florence, Yeovil, who also helped during the event. Yeovil College is very grateful to these employers, who not only kindly gave their time to judge and watch the Hair Show, but also offer support to Yeovil College students throughout the year.

King Arthurs School pupil and 14-16 Yeovil College student Lucy Raison, 15, of Henstridge, won in the Bridal category, while the Animation winner was Maria Jordan, 17, of Yeovil.

The Fantasy award went to Natalie Briant, 16, of Merriott, and Sam Ball, 28, of Castle Cary, received the top Historical/Cultural prize.

Rosie Powell, 30, of Yeovil won in the Avant-Garde category.

The student winners received prizes of top hair products donated by Cyril Gallie, Studio CCK, Salon Supplies, Salonwear, Aston and Fincher, Cutting Edge, Chop and Change and Salon Services (Sallies).

Faculty director Chris Burton said: “Yeovil College’s hair students never fail to amaze me with their incredible creativity, imagination and skill.

“Although they only choose from five categories, they always manage to come up with a stunning range of styles and looks which really demonstrate how much their skills have developed during their time at YeovilCollege.

“The great success of the Hair show and the wonderful feedback from everyone who came to see it is a real credit to the hard work of all the staff and students involved.  We’re very proud of them and sure that they will go on to very successful careers in the industry.”
