Cash boost for Yeovil school's sensory garden

A YEOVIL primary school can now add flowers to its sensory garden thanks to a cash boost from Wessex Water.

Pupils from Preston Primary School applied for support through the water company’s Watermark award scheme which recognises environmental projects in its region.

The school’s headteacher, Bernie Green, said: “We are delighted to have this support from Wessex Water and look forward to showing nature off at its best.

“The garden has transformed the front of our school and is not only used by the children but parents and visitors can also come along and enjoy it.Cash boost for Yeovil school's sensory garden

“We hope that everyone who visits the school will appreciate the variety of sights, sounds and smells and maybe even be inspired to create a sensory garden of their own.”

Sally Baker, of Wessex Water, presented the school with the £200 cheque last Wednesday.

Wessex Water Watermark awards provide funds for environmental projects within the Wessex Water region.

This year the scheme is celebrating its 20th anniversary. To mark the event, the firm has launched a special award to specifically support water conservation projects in the region.

The Sustainable Watermark will run until March 2014 and there is £10,000 to give away to groups across the region – with single projects able to secure up to £2,000.

To qualify applicants need to prove that they are working on water saving projects in community halls, schools or other community buildings. This can include anything from installing water saving devices and harvesting rainwater to promoting water saving behaviour.
