YEOVIL College has been selected to run the Government’s flagship personal and social development programme for young people in Somerset this year - and has been given support by survival expert Bear Grylls (pictured).

The National Citizen Service offers 16 and 17-year-olds from different backgrounds valuable life experiences, through team and individual challenges run by selected organisations across the country.

NCS aims to promote a more cohesive, responsible and engaged society by bringing young people from different backgrounds together to make a difference in their communities.

The Yeovil College programme will be delivered in July and will commence with a five-day stay at an outdoor pursuits centre.

Participants make new friends and challenge themselves throughout the programme, planning and delivering a social action project on a local issue that matter to them.Bear Grylls backs Yeovil College initiative

NCS enables young people to develop important skills that they can take with them into the world of work.

Those interested in taking part in the NCS programme should contact the college on 01935-423921.

Andy Perlejewski, director of 14-19 at Yeovil College, said: "This is a brilliant scheme to give young people the opportunity to learn new skills, build their confidence, make friends and have fun over the summer whilst they prepare to start a new course at college, an Apprenticeship or start a new job.’’

NCS ambassador, Bear Grylls, said: “This is one of the most exciting projects in the UK at the moment: empowering our youth with much needed life skills through adventure. It is how we heal this country from inside out and with the youth leading the way. I am so proud to represent this vision."
