Don't become a victim of rogue traders

POLICE in Yeovil and across the East Somerset police district are taking part in a national week of awareness about distraction burglary and rogue trading.Don't become a victim of rogue traders

These doorstep criminals often prey on vulnerable, elderly and disabled people, tricking them into letting them into their homes, overcharging for incomplete or poor work – or taking money for work that is never actually carried out.

Throughout this week, neighbourhood police teams have been out raising awareness with elderly residents, their families and relevant organisations about this type of crime.

Across the area officers have been visiting banks to make them aware of elderly residents looking to withdraw large sums of money unexpectedly. Banks can sometimes be the first to be aware that this offence is taking place.

The Bobby Van has also visited residents in the area, including Yeovil, Street and Wells, who have been nominated by local Neighbourhood Watch members.

These residents have been provided with advice about increasing the security around their home and door chains and locks have been fitted where appropriate.

In South Somerset - including Yeovil, Wincanton, Chard and Somerton - officers have also been out and about making pre-announced door to door visits to advise elderly residents about crime prevention.  In addition, they have held information stands in doctor’s surgeries throughout the area.

CI Sean Williams said: “There have been a range of activities taking place this week to get the message out as widely as possible about this type of crime.

“Doorstep crime is not a common crime but we are keen to raise awareness as it is a crime type where increased awareness can help with preventing incidents from taking place. It is also a very callous crime as it targets elderly and vulnerable people and can have a long lasting effect on victims.

“We would encourage people to make sure their elderly relatives or neighbours are aware of these types of fraudsters and of the crime prevention advice and would encourage anyone who has been a victim of this type of crime to contact the police as soon as possible.”

Top tips on staying safe from rogue traders and distraction burglars:Don't become a victim of rogue traders

•       If you’re not sure who’s at your door, don’t open it

•       Call a neighbour, family member or friend nearby to come along and check out the caller before you open the door to them.

•       Genuine callers will make an appointment to see you and will happily come when you have someone with you.

•       To check someone’s identify, use a telephone directory – don’t use a number given by the caller as it may be bogus.

•       Don’t keep large quantities of cash at home – put it in a bank or Post Office account.

•       Keep your doors and windows secure at all times.

•       If you suspect a bogus caller is at your door, call 999. We would rather be called to a false alarm than not called at all.

Remember, it’s your doorstep and your decision!
