End of the road for Modello?

PLANS have been unveiled to turn a large town centre building – which incorporates the Modello bar and restaurant in Stars Lane - into 35 apartments.End of the road for Modello?

Intercounty Properties have applied to South Somerset District Council for planning permission to transform the large 1970s building which stands virtually opposite the entrance to Glovers Walk.

The site consists of a three-storey building that fronts onto Middle Street with the rear of the building having two storeys on Stars Lane – shoppers will know the large prominent building as the one which goes over Poundland in Middle Street and the Modello bar and restaurant in Stars Lane.

Above Poundland and Modello are office suites which are currently vacant other than those used by a radio station.

The proposals look to retain Poundland, but convert the remainder of the building to form 22 flats with a second floor extension over the entire building to provide a further 13 flats to total 35.

Twenty-five of these will be one-bedroom flats and ten will be two-bedroom units.

District planning officer, Simon Fox, has said in a report that the existing terrace to the bar/restaurant in Stars Lane would revert to a walled garden area with bike store.

Mr Fox said there were a number of key points to the application including:

  • The proposal represents a significant regeneration opportunity for this part of the town centre.
  • The current office suite is mostly vacant and has been for some time.
  • The loss of the bar/restaurant, but the retention of the retail outlet.

The application will be discussed by Yeovil Town Council’s planning and licensing committee before a final decision is made by the district council.
