They introduced Operation Flagstaff at the end of 2012 and deploying extra officers on foot every day between 6pm and 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.

Sgt Jamie Rees said: “The number of officers policing Yeovil – especially on Friday and Saturday nights – hasn’t increased greatly, but we now have more officers on foot rather than in vehicles.

“We have also increased the level of partnership working, with local businesses and licensing officers for examples, and have pooled the response offiers and neighbourhood beat officers.”

Sgt Rees said: “It means that should an incident occur within the town centre, you are more likely to have an officer respond on foot than in a vehicle.

“Officers will be on the ground, visible and ready to tackle incidents as they happen.

“We are also identifying potential problems as early as possible to try to nip them in the bud and prevent the issue from arising in the first place.”

Sgt Rees added: “We spoke to local people and they told us they want visibility, reassurance and confidence in their local police and Operation Flagstaff is helping to deliver this.”
