Garden tools for Yeovil schools and community groups

Garden tools for Yeovil schools and community groupsSCHOOLS and community groups from Yeovil are being invited to put themselves forward to receive free garden tools from a Somerset garden centre.

Monkton Elm Garden & Pet Centre is giving away refurbished tools to schools and community groups to use for gardening projects as part of The Conservation Foundation’s Tools Shed programme.

Norma Moore, general manager at the garden centre at Monkton Heathfield near Taunton, explained: “At the beginning of the year we kicked off our Tools Shed initiative and invited people to donate their unwanted or damaged tools to the garden centre in exchange for a £5 voucher to spend on a replacement.

“The tools we are collecting will be donated to the Tools Shed initiative and will be repaired at Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP) Dartmoor.

It has been a huge success so far and we have received lots of donations. The first batch of tools have been refurbished by prisoners, providing them with work and giving them the chance to gain skills.”

The garden centre will be giving away bundles of the revamped tools on a first come, first served basis to schools and community groups that come forward.

Norma added: “We have nine bundles of tools to giveaway so we are urging people to get in touch as soon as possible. The closing date for requests is 5pm on Friday, May 10, 2013.”

The successful applicants will be invited to go and collect their tools from the garden centre at a mutually convenient time. By entering the competition, the winner or winners have agreed to take part in publicity.

Requests for the tools should be emailed to the garden centre’s public relations company, Porcupine PR at  hello@porcupinepr.co.uk .
