Specialist autism unit planned for Yeovil

PLANS to build a specialist Autism Unit for young people at Preston Community School in Yeovil have been unveiled.

South West Highways Ltd has submitted a planning application to South Somerset District Council for permission to go-ahead with the project to build a single-storey building at the school in Monks Dale.

The Autism and Communication Service is working with Preston to provide a calm and nurturing environment for youngsters with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome who find mainstream school particularly difficult.

A report said: “Preston has a strong pastoral tradition and a good structure for pupil management which will provide the approach necessary for an autism unit.

“The structured and caring approach of this school will be particularly helpful for this group of pupils to ensure they reach their potential.”
