Exciting plans for Yeovil College

PLANS have been announced for a new and purpose-built Centre for Independent Living Skills at Yeovil College for 2013.

The centre forms part of the college’s pledge to improve facilities across the campus for all students and adds to the recent launch of a brand new A level Academy and redevelopment of the Nexus Mall incorporating new Hair and Beauty Salons, Da Vinci Restaurant and student café/shop in 2011-2012.

Planning permission for the new centre was approved in December and the development is now underway. Plans to extend the facilities currently available for students with additional and specialist learning needs have been made possible thanks to a grant from Dorset County Council for £330,000 as part of a national pledge from the Government to support all students into training, work and to take a fully active role in society.

Cllr Toni Coombs, Dorset County Council’s spokemsan for children’s services, said: “We are delighted that Yeovil College has been chosen to develop an extended Centre for Independent Living on their campus in Yeovil.

''The new facility will help to ensure that more students with additional needs across Dorset and Somerset will be able to benefit from the specialist facilities that the centre will bring.”

The new innovative two storey centre will include an additional kitchen/living area, a training bedroom and bathroom to enable students to develop personal skills to live independently and leading to potential employability skills.

All training equipment will be height adjustable and fully accessible for wheelchair users and students with reduced mobility, plus students will benefit from a state-of-the-art personal care suite.

The new centre will be ready for new students for September 2013.
