A life lost or a life saved?

PEOPLE in the Yeovil area are being offered the chance to learn the skills that can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.A life lost or a life saved?

St John Ambulance is hosting an Essential First Aid training course for all ages at the St John Ambulance centre in Memorial Road on February 23 from 10am to 1pm.

The course is suitable for all ages and covers the main first aid scenarios for babies, children and adults including choking, severe bleeding, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, and dealing with an unconscious casualty.

Research carried out by St John Ambulance showed that up to 140,000 people die every year in situations where first aid could have made the difference.

But a survey revealed that fewer than one in five people know the basic first aid skills that can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.

St John's schools, youth and community development officer for Somerset, Jen Forsyth, said: ''Learning first aid is one of the single most important things you can do in your life. You never know when you may need it – at work, at home, in school, playing sport – but it can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.

''These courses are designed to make learning first aid easy and fun and there is something to suit everyone from young people, parents and grandparents to people involved in community groups.''

The charity operates the courses to help its aim to equip more people with first aid skills and keeps the fee to £30, which just covers the cost of putting on the course.

Advance booking is essential via St John Ambulance on 01278 726763, www.sja.org.uk or via jen.forsyth@sja.org.uk.
