Roadside 'car showrooms' cause concern

To see a car parked up with a ‘for sale’ sign in the window is nothing new with many of them being privately-placed, but councillors are worried that some are turning their car-selling exploits into a commercial business.

There are some well-used roads in the town where it is not uncommon to see several cars all parked next to each other in what appear to be unofficial car showrooms.

Now members of Yeovil Town Council’s buildings and civic matters committee want to see what the legalities are for running such businesses.

Their concerns came during a discussion last week about highway safety along West Coker Road – arguably one of the busiest in the town.

Committee chairman, Cllr Andrew Kendall, said: ‘’Members raised during the meeting the matter of the number of cars parked on the sides of West Coker Road which are being offered for sale.

‘’This has given councillors concerns about highways safety and the apparent lack of regulation of this activity.’’

Somerset County Council is looking at putting in pedestrian refuges along West Coker Road in a bid to help people walk across the fast moving road.

Cllr Bridget Dollard said she hoped that town council representatives for that area would be involved in the ongoing County Hall project.

But councillors are keen to find out what the legal position is about cars for sale being put on show at the sides of roads.
