Snow 2013: Parents urged to 'stay safe and wait'

PARENTS across Yeovil and South Somerset are being urged to ‘be safe and wait’ as the likelihood of heavy snowfall on Friday increases the risk of school buses not running.Snow 2013: Parents urged to 'stay safe and wait'

Schools across Somerset are advising parents to have a stress free drive to work knowing their children have arrived safe at school tomorrow (Friday, January 18) and not to leave them alone expecting buses to arrive.

Last year, Somerset County Council had reports that children were left alone waiting for buses that could not make it through heavy snowfall or floods.

Cllr Harvey Siggs said:  "It's better to arrive for work late knowing your child is on the bus or having made other arrangements.

"It's the responsibility of parents to make sure their children get on school transport and aren't left stranded in the cold."

Details of any school closures will be available on www.somerset.gov.uk .

Sexey's School in Bruton have already made the decision to close tomorrow.

Somerset County Council has 8,200 tonnes of salt stored at depots throughout Somerset, and crews for the fleet of 23 gritters are standing by. Plus many parish and town councils are well prepared to salt roads and paths and support their local community.

Details of when the gritters will be treating the roads throughout the winter will be posted on the service's Twitter account @somersetgritter.

A map showing which roads are included on salting routes can be found on the council's website, the winter maintenance service's leaflet, or in every home's copy of Your Somerset which was delivered earlier this month.
