Prime Minister praises Yeovil workforce

THE Prime Minister, David Cameron, has congratulated Yeovil company AgustaWestland on gaining its first export order for the new AW159 Wildcat helicopter (pictured).

The Finmeccanica company announced last night that Korea had selected the AW159 to meet its ‘maritime operational helicopter’ requirement – believed to be worth around £250m.

The contract for eight AW159 aircraft is the first export for the Yeovil company.

And Mr Cameron said: “The announcement demonstrates Britain’s ability to successfully compete in the global race.

“I’m delighted the Korean Government has chosen to continue its relationship with AgustaWestland in selecting this state of the art maritime helicopter which will safeguard high quality jobs and skills in Yeovil and across the country.”

Yeovil MP David Laws added: “This news is a boost for our local economy and good news for the rest of the UK.

“I congratulate all those at AgustaWestland who have helped to win this important contract which will secure hundreds of jobs for people in Yeovil and throughout the country.

“It is extremely impressive that AgustaWestland has won this contract against stiff opposition from international competitors.”

Mr Laws added: “This demonstrates the strength and quality of the manufacturing workforce that we have in Yeovil and throughout the UK.

“This is also great news for the Wildcat programme and can only be good for our prospects of securing further business.”
