Don't feed bread to the ducks

RANGERS at the Yeovil Countryside Park are asking people to try and refrain from feeding bread to the ducks.Don't feed bread to the ducks

Feeding the ducks at the countryside park – better known locally as Ninesprings – has been a popular pastime for parents with young children for generations.

But experts have warned that too much starchy bread is leaving ducks bloated and lethargic.

An article put out on Facebook says that experts have warned that ducks may even develop a craving for the treats given to them by well-meaning people – rather than go forarging for more nutritious vegetation which they need to remain healthy and agile.

Experts from the RSPB and the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust have now warned that people need to be mindful of how they feed the birds – asking them to swap potentially harmful white bread for more nutritious grains.

Countryside ranger Rachel Whaites, speaking on Facebook, said: “Please feed seed to our ducks to keep them happy and healthy.”
