Running club vows to beat the arsonists

YEOVIL Town Road Running Club is having to raise around £3,000 to recover funds spent on replacing equipment lost during an arson attack.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service was called out at around 6.15pm on December 23 to Yeovil Town Football Club in Lufton Way where the running club keeps a trailer with its equipment.

The trailer was badly damaged in a compound at the football ground along with toilets and the running club’s committee heard last night that the cost of replacing the items was likely to be just under £3,000.

The club has vowed not to let the vandals defeat it and is coming up with a raft of measures to raise the necessary funds.

The club’s Terry Byrne, who writes a weekly blog on Yeovil Town RRC’s website, said: “The damaged trailer needs to be emptied, the equipment cleaned and then moved until the trailer can be replaced.”

Club members have been asked to help by meeting at Huish Park on Saturday at 12noon.

The lost equipment will be replaced out of club funds, but the committee has decided that the money will need to be recouped as quickly as possible.

It was decided last night that an Emergency General Meeting will be held at the Forum Cafe on Abbey Manor Park, Yeovil, on Wednesday, March 6, at 6.30pm where it will be proposed that the club subscription increases by £5 to £25 (£30 for new members).

Terry added: “Additional fundraising will be required, but if anyone has any ideas please come to a committee meeting or let a committee member know.”

The club will also be looking for any company interested in sponsoring the trailer and have its logo on the side.
