Party season 'sees' increased eye health worries

THE party season is well underway and independent opticians across Yeovil are encouraging women to consider their eye health during the Christmas period and in the run up to New Years’ Eve.Party season 'sees' increased eye health worries

Research suggests that women typically spend an hour applying make-up before a party night out, and this year independent opticians are urging closer attention to the make-up that is applied to the eye area and greater care in the removal of cosmetics post party.

Eye inflammation and spread of infection can occur with old cosmetics, especially water based products like mascara and liquid eye liner that can harbour bacteria.

If make-up is worn while sleeping this too can increase the risk of eye infections and allergic reactions as well as lens irritation. Contact lens wearers are also reminded that despite the time of day or levels of tiredness, lenses should always be removed before bed time unless they are prescribed for overnight wear.

Coming together under the Sight Care independent optician network, practices in Yeovil are encouraging an ‘out with the old in with the new’ motto when it comes to eye make-up.

Paul Surridge, chief executive of Sight Care, said: “Eye health is important throughout the year, however the party season means that more women are at risk of developing unsightly eye infections that could put a dampener on the seasons festivities.

“If make-up is used past the recommended use by date, women increase their risk of contracting eye infections including styes and conjunctivitis. As a rule, mascara and liquid eye liner should be discarded three to six months after opening, with all other eye make-up being replaced on a regular basis.”

Sight Care’s five tips to maintain eye health during the Christmas party season:

1.       Stick to the motto ‘out with the old and in with the new’ by throwing out and replacing all outdated eye make-up.
2.       Ensure all make-up is removed before going to sleep to prevent any irritation to the eyes (if you’re a contact lens wearer ensure that you remove them and place in the correct solution before bed unless they are prescribed for overnight wear).
3.       Clean all cosmetic brushes on a regular basis as part of a hygienic eye health routine.
4.       When at the Christmas party avoid sharing eye make-up with friends and colleagues, as germs can be easily spread.
5.       Eye make-up is not meant to be worn 24 hours a day every day. Give your eyes a break and try the natural look, allowing skin around the eyes time to regenerate.
