Cash boost for West Coker

SOUTH Somerset District Council has awarded the West Coker Commemoration Fund a grant of £4,000 at their recent Area South Committee for essential works to keep the new village hall building open during the winter months.

The West Coker Commemoration Fund recently acquired a building for the village, which is now being used as a village hall with a wide variety of uses which include keep fit classes, a weekly youth club, WI meetings, business training, arts classes and community events.  Cash boost for West Coker

However, the hall is in need of renovation and in particular a new boiler and insulation. The current boiler does not work and the majority of the ceiling has no insulation at all. This meant that the hall would have been forced to shut in the winter if the money for the urgent works had not been found.

Community buildings play a crucial role in local communities as a focal point for community activity and a base for local groups, so members of South Somerset District Council Area South unanimously agreed to support the grant application.

Cllr Tony Fife, Area South Chairman for South Somerset District Council, said: “We consider village halls a vital part of our local communities, so we were very happy to support this application and ensure this important facility remained open.”
