New direction for Yeovil Recycling Centre

IMPORTANT improvements at Yeovil Recycling Centre in Artillery Road on the Lufton Trading Estate will be unveiled tomorrow (Thursday, November 8).   New direction for Yeovil Recycling Centre

Carried out over the past five weeks, the changes, which will save time for customers while making the site more efficient, include:

  • Reversing traffic flow so the previous exit becomes the entrance, with an automatic raised arm barrier to prevent overcrowding.
  • Installing new signs with helpful pictures so that the materials containers can be easily seen and quickly used.
  • Creating a new drop-off point for large heavy items, such as fridges, freezers and washing machines.

Although Yeovil Recycling Centre is one of Somerset’s busiest sites with almost 106,000 visitors in 2011-12, the improvements were carried out during its usual closure days.

Hours at Yeovil Recycling Centre are unchanged, with the centre open Thursday-Friday-Saturday 8am-4pm, Sunday 8am-1pm, Monday 8am-7pm, and closed Tuesday-Wednesday.

Alternative locations are available on Tuesday and Wednesday 8am-4pm, including Crewkerne Community Recycling Site (£2 entry fee) on the Blacknell Lane Industrial Estate and Castle Cary Recycling Centre at Dimmer Lane.

Yeovil Recycling Centre remains free to enter, with charges starting at £2.90 only for four materials classified as non-household waste: hardcore, soil, gas bottles and tyres.

As well as the 30+ materials taken at all of Somerset’s 18 sites, Yeovil Recycling Centre accepts asbestos (call ahead to ensure space), plasterboard, window glass and beverage cartons.

Somerset Waste Partnership managing director Steve Read said: “These changes should all make the centre easier to use, helping customers save time while recycling more.

“If anything is unclear, visitors should check the signs or ask for help from the centre staff.”
