Police aim to 'disrupt, dismantle and destory' cannabis factories following Yeovil discovery

POLICE are determined to carry on their efforts to ‘disrupt, dismantle and destroy’ drug-producing operations following the discovery of a cannabis factory yesterday in Yeovil.

Officers became alerted following the breakout of a fire at a home in Sherborne Road yesterday afternoon which saw traffic chaos envelope the town centre while the road was shut as firefighters dealt with the blaze.

What firefighters revealed was of great interest to the police – around 150 cannabis plants worth a street value of £100,000.

The police’s head of force drugs strategy, Paul Bunt, said: "This is a significant seizure and we are carrying out various lines of enquiry at this time. We have seized around 150 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of more than £100,000.

"This incident also demonstrates the potential dangers of abstracting electricity. The combination of water, humidity and electricity is potentially lethal and it is fortunate the property was unoccupied at the time.

"We will be continuing our investigation in relation to this incident and I would urge anyone with any information on it to contact the police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800-555111.’’

Mr Bunt added: "Operation Viscount is continuing across Avon and Somerset and we will continue to be relentless in our efforts to disrupt, dismantle and destroy cannabis production and associated crime in our area."
