Girls get apprenticeships with Yarlington

WITH over one million young people not in employment, education or training, Yeovil-based Yarlington Housing Group  is going the extra mile to give opportunities to them and prepare them for the world of work.

As part of the ongoing apprentice programme, Yarlington Housing Group has welcomed Yeovil girls Chloe Higgins and Mica Cain (pictured) as they join the company for three years.

They will spend time with all of the departments within the business to develop relevant transferable skills and gain technical abilities that they will need in their future chosen career.

Chloe, 16, from BucklersMeadAcademy in Yeovil, heard about the scheme from friends, and made enquiries while at the Careers Fair last autumn. She was very impressed by Yarlington’s development opportunities, and how it is a ‘people’ focused company.

“I have two friends who are going through apprenticeships with Yarlington” said Chloe. “I had heard such good things that I was delighted when I was invited to join the scheme.”

Seventeen-year-old Mica, from Westfield Academy, Yeovil, had researched apprenticeships on the internet, and was also keen to join the housing association.

“Yarlington is the best company with the best opportunities,” she said. “I am in the finance department at the moment, which am really enjoying.”

The rolling programme, in conjunction with Somerset Skills and Learning, is now in its third year, and has already seen the five corporate apprentices from 2010 making excellent progress. In addition to the opportunities within the offices, Yarlington Housing Association also has trade apprenticeships in plumbing and carpentry.

Rachel Bailey, coordinator of the apprentice programme said “We are looking forward to working with Mica and Chloe and building on our previous success. The apprenticeship scheme is a great opportunity for young people to gain qualifications and get excellent real work experience.”
