Open day at Yeovil District Hospital

YEOVIL District Hospital’s Open Day on Thursday (October 11, 2012) has hands-on activities and demonstrations to interest people from all walks of life.

From 1.30pm staff from across the Trust will be available to meet visitors in the hospital Academy. Scientists from the Pathology Department will be giving demonstrations and showing how they contribute to patient care and the Medical Electronics Department will be opening its doors to the public to reveal the wide range of up-to-date equipment which supports patient care.

Nurses will be on hand to check blood pressures and pulses. The Stroke team will be highlighting the FAST test which indicates whether someone is likely to have suffered a stroke emphasising the importance for them to receive urgent hospital treatment. Information will also be available on the risk factors around stroke and how they can be reduced.

The therapy teams will be discussing the science behind their professions, carrying out cognitive assessments which are used to assess patients who have difficulties with memory and understanding and exhibiting a range of gadgets which support their patients’ recovery.

Infection control will be emphasising the importance of their role in the hospital and explaining some of the work they do. Sim Man3G will be demonstrated – a fully interactive ‘robot’ patient who can be programmed to have a range of medical conditions who talks to medical staff to tell them how he is feeling!

Palliative Care nurses will be raising awareness of dying, death and bereavement and the wide range of support which is available and informing visitors about how the majority of people can donate tissue on their death to benefit others.

There will also be an opportunity to find out more about organ donation, the Flying Colours Appeal which is raising money for the Special Care Baby Unit, the work of our maternity unit, how the hospital safeguards vulnerable adults, to sample some of the produce from the governors’ local food initiative and to learn more about the wide range of clinical and non-clinical careers which can be pursued at Yeovil District Hospital. There will also be information on how to become a hospital member or a volunteer.
 
At 2.30pm visitors will be invited into the lecture theatre to listen to talks on diabetes and healthy hearts from our specialist members of staff and to hear about the hospital’s plans for the future from Chief Executive, Paul Mears.
