CHRISTMAS 2016: Recycle your real Christmas tree after the festive season

RESIDENTS in South Somerset will be able to leave their natural Christmas trees ready to be shredded and recycled at various sites across the district.

From Boxing Day, specific locations will have areas set aside for residents to leave their Christmas trees which will be shredded later in the month January:

In Yeovil people can leave their “real” Christmas trees at Birchfield Car Park, Yew Tree Park, Stars Lane Car Park and Johnson.

There are 33 other sites around the district which will have facilities available for people to leave their trees.

These locations are as follows:

Residents are asked not to leave any trees at the locations above after Monday, January 16, 2017.

Once the trees have been shredded, the chippings will be left in bags so that residents can take them free of charge to be used at home.

The district council’s environment spokesman, Cllr Jo Roundell Greene, said: “From the take up of parish and town councils that wanted a shredding area, we already know there is going to be a big demand for the shredding service that we will provide from residents.

“This really is a great opportunity to get rid of your tree locally and also know that it will be used to improve our environment in South Somerset.”

Alternatively, decoration-free natural Christmas trees under 6ft can be recycled by composting.

Take decoration-free natural trees to any recycling site for composting.

If you pay for a garden waste collection, put out your tree next to your bin or sack on your usual waste collection day from Monday, January 9, 2017. As a last resort, put your tree next to your refuse on your usual collections day.
