SOMERSET NEWS: School in a Bag supports refugee children in Dunkirk

THE Somerset-based charity School in a Bag – which provides a simple solution to help poor, orphan, vulnerable and disaster-affected children throughout the world – has been supporting those living at a refugee camp at Dunkirk in France.

School in a Bag, based at Chilthorne Domer near Yeovil, provides bags filled with stationery equipment and resources that will enable a child to write, draw, colour, calculate, express themselves and above all learn.

Each SchoolBag delivered to a child will give hope to his or her future and has the potential to transform their lives.

Thousands of refugees from the Middle East and Africa – who have been fleeing persecution, violence, terror and war – have been settling in refugee camps in northern France hoping to one day reach the UK.SOMERSET NEWS: School in a Bag supports refugee children in Dunkirk

School in a Bag was born in late 2009 following a collaboration project send SchoolBags to orphan children in Swaziland, Africa.

Since then around 73,000 SchoolBags have been shipped around the globe with the consignment of bags going to the refugee camp making France country number 33 supported by School in a Bag.

Chief executive officer Luke Simon said: “We’ve made it into our 33rd country when SchoolBags were delivered into a refugee camp in Dunkirk in France yesterday (Wednesday, September 28, 2016) and the children were delighted with them.”

School in a Bag was an initiative coming out of the Piers Simon Appeal which was launched following the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004 which killed hundreds of thousands of people including former Preston School and Yeovil College student Piers Simon.

Each SchoolBag costs £20 and for more information about the charity and how to get involved go to http://www.schoolinabag.org/ .

Members of the School in a Bag team are always looking for more supporters and provide many talks around the area and are more than keen to get local schools involved.

The Yeovil Press is delighted to support School in a Bag and the Piers Simon Appeal.
