SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Singing in the rain for Party on the Park

THE annual Party on the Park in Ilminster would not be the same if it did not have some rain and so it was inevitable that the heavens would open on Sunday (August 28, 2016) afternoon.

But the rain failed to dampen the enthusiasm for organisers, performers, stall holders and visitors to the Ilminster Recreation Ground.

There were stalls aplenty, live music, displays, games and refreshments galore for people to enjoy – even though there were occasions when they had to dive for cover to get out of the rain.

Among the stall-holders was the Mayor of Ilminster, Cllr Val Keitch, who ran tombolas for children and adults.

All the money raised at her stall will go towards the Mayor’s Charities and Cllr Keitch will be inviting local groups and organisations in the early part of 2017 to apply for a slice of the proceeds she makes during her year in office.

The Mayor, speaking on social media, said: “The Party on the Park was a great day. I met some lovely people and apart from the rain it was a super day. Well done to those who organise it all.”

There was a display from the Ilminster Majorettes, while live music was provided by the Elvis Experience, Edge of Knowhere, Hillbilly Sunrise, The Salt and Wise Intentions.

A spokesman for the organisers said: “Thank you to everyone who helped and those who came out and enjoyed.”

There was also a very public head shave by Anji Dobbs in aid of Zellweger UK and Epilepsy Society (see separate story), while Billie Western used the Party on the Park to have her own party to celebrate her 50th birthday.
